MANILA, Philippines — Xiamen Airlines is reviving direct flights between Cebu and port district Quanzhou, testing the travel demand now that visa requirements for Chinese nationals are lifted.

In a social media post, the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) announced the revival of direct flights between Cebu and Quanzhou starting March 29.

The flight will operate on a twice-weekly schedule, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and it expands MCIA’s international connectivity, particularly in mainland China.

MCIA said the return of direct flights to Quanzhou rebuilds Cebu’s access to China. The airport looks at the resumption of Quanzhou trips as an opportunity for Cebu to improve its business and tourism exchange with China.

Quanzhou is located in the province of Fujian, which sits just across Taiwan. The city is viewed as one of the most important components of the Maritime Silk Road, a network of sea routes that connected traders from across the globe.

Still, the most important part of the direct flight is that it could boost Chinese arrivals into Cebu, now that Chinese nationals can stay in the Philippines without a visa for up to 14 days.
