Patrick Stewart, James Marsden, and Ian McKellen in "Avengers: Doomsday"
Marvel Studios
MANILA, Philippines — At long last, mutants will play a large part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) once "Avengers: Doomsday" comes along.
Marvel Studios dropped another teaser trailer for the upcoming "Avengers" movie, this new one centering on the X-Men to accompany those of Chris Evans' Steve Rogers and Chris Hemsworth's Thor.
The one-minute teaser takes place in the heavily rummaged Xavier School, the educational institute for young mutants run by Patrick Stewart's Professor Charles Xavier.
"Death comes for us all. It's all I know for sure," says the voice of Xavier's good friend and rival Erik Lehnsherr or Magneto, reprised by Ian McKellen."The question isn't 'Are you prepared to die?' The question is, who would you be when you close your eyes."
The slow piano version of the "Avengers" theme plays over Charles and Erik clasping hands by a chess board, until the scene shifts to James Marsden's Scott Summers a.k.a Cyclops taking off his visor to unleash his optic blasts.
The integration of mutants into the MCU has been long anticipated by fans ever since Marvel's owner Disney in 2019 bought rival studio Fox, which had the film rights to the X-Men, having released films on the mutant team or its members since 2000.
Since the acquisition, mutant lore has been gradually teased in the MCU such as Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) in "Ms. Marvel" and Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."
A variant of Professor X — still Patrick Stewart — appears in 2022's "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" while "The Marvels" the following year saw Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) transported to a universe with mutants including Hank "Beast" McCoy (Kelsey Grammer).
The anthology show "What If...?" features the character Storm from fellow animated series "X-Men '97" and parts of "Deadpool & Wolverine" are set in a mutant universe where the latter character (played by Hugh Jackman) originates.
McKellen last portrayed Magneto in 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past," where Marsden and Grammer made cameo appearances by the film's end.
Other co-stars from past "X-Men" or adjacent films confirmed to return for "Avengers: Doomsday" are Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and Channing Tatum.
Joining them and Evans, Hemsworth, and Huerta are Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Joseph Quinn, Tom Hiddleston, and Pedro Pascal.
