MANILA, Philippines — The World Bank has provided a $400-million loan to be used in building health facilities in the country’s remote areas, the Department of Health said yesterday.?

DOH Secretary Ted Herbosa said the loan is intended for the construction of additional health centers aimed at giving residents in hard-to-reach areas access to health care.?

“The World Bank gave me a $400-million loan to be used in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. We will be building modern health centers for our kababayans so there is no need for those needing immediate care to be brought (to hospitals) in Manila and Cebu, especially if we will be confronted with another pandemic,” Herbosa said in a televised public briefing.?

The DOH chief explained that building these additional health centers falls under its “Health System Resiliency project” wherein 17 hard-to-reach provinces with 257 sites are the target beneficiaries.?

“These are remote areas without doctors, without (health) centers and using the World Bank money, we will build these modern health facilities,” Herbosa said.

Herbosa said the project, to be undertaken within four years, is a concrete step in bringing Universal Health Care coverage closer to the people.
