Two meteor showers will be visible in the skies this August, providing viewing opportunities throughout the month, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its astronomical diary.

The Perseid meteor shower, one of the most active annual showers, will be active from July 17 to Aug. 24. It is expected to peak on Aug. 12.

Under dark, moonless skies, the Perseids may produce up to 150 meteors per hour.

However, PAGASA said the moon will be in its last quarter phase on the night of the peak, which may reduce visibility due to its brightness.

The best viewing time is during the early morning hours, particularly between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., when the radiant point is highest in the sky.

PAGASA said the meteors will appear to originate from the constellation Perseus, which rises in the east at 10:06 p.m. each night.

Also active this month is the κ-Cygnid meteor shower, which runs from Aug. 3 to 25 and is expected to peak on Aug. 17.

PAGASA described κ-Cygnid meteor shower as a more subtle shower, producing an average of about three meteors per hour.

It radiates from the constellation Draco, with peak visibility expected around 9 p.m. each night.

PAGASA recommended observing from dark, open areas away from city lights, such as rural areas or elevated locations, for the best chance of seeing meteors.

No telescopes or special equipment are needed.
