Roses, notably red ones, are popular flowers to give to loved ones during special occasions, most especially on Valentine's Day.
But what does the red rose symbolize?
According to Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras" Friday, it is believed that the Ancient Greeks associated the red rose with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. This is likely why the flower became a symbol of love and desire, and is used in romantic gestures.
In Ancient Rome, the Kapuso host said that red roses were used in official ceremonies. These flowers would be given as gifts to important figures as a sign of respect and thus symbolized power and authority.
Giving red flowers to show love, meanwhile, was believed to have become popular during the Victorian Era, per Kuya Kim. Victorians would utilize floriography, also known as the language of flower, to silently communicate a message or express emotions.
As for the rose's red hue, this is caused by anthocyanins or water-soluble plant pigments.
