MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is aware of reports that some groups are pushing to file an impeachment complaint against him and is prepared to face it should the effort reach a formal stage, Malacañang said.
Speaking at a Palace briefing on Monday, January 12, Press Officer Claire Castro said impeachment should not be used merely as a threat or a media spectacle.
“It would be better to address the issues directly,” Castro said in Filipino, referring to claims that supporters of the Dutertes were considering impeachment moves.
She added that some allegations suggest the effort is meant to divert attention from accusations of fund misuse and alleged receipt of millions of pesos from drug lords.
On allegations of “breach of public trust,” the Palace said there was no factual basis to support the claims, including issues raised over Marcos’ signing of the General Appropriations Act and alleged anomalies in flood control projects.
“If we are talking about breach of public trust over the GAA signing, first, he did not steal any public funds; second, he is the one who ordered investigations into anomalous flood control projects; and third, there is no ‘Mary Grace Piattos,’” Castro added.
The Palace official was referring to a supposed ghost recipient of public funds entrusted to Vice President Sara Duterte, who herself was facing an impeachment complaint over graft allegations.
Lawmaker Edgar Erice earlier said some groups were considering filing an impeachment complaint against Marcos over alleged betrayal of public trust. — Based on a report by Martin Ramos
