The threat of prosecution at the International Criminal Court figured pretty early in Rodrigo Duterte’s term as president — ever since he made good on threats of bloodshed against drug suspects. He was always cavalier when speaking about it: I’m not afraid. I am ready and willing to fess up. Bring it on. Then came the moment when the ICC caught up with him.
On March 11, through videos leaked to the public by witnesses, we saw Duterte try to wiggle out of being arrested on a warrant from the Interpol. From his arrival at NAIA Terminal 3, to the tense hours at Villamor Air base, until he finally boarded a chartered plane to The Hague, the story of how the scenario he must have brushed off as impossible became reality.
To say that there was a change — in his tone, in the man himself — is an understatement. – Rappler.com
