MANILA, Philippines — Students and teachers of Mahayahay Elementary School in Davao Occidental were in the middle of their morning flag ceremony when strong shaking from a magnitude 7.8 earthquake was felt Monday, June 8.
In the video from DepEd Mahayahay Elementary School, students and teachers can be seen gathered outside when the quake struck around 7:38 a.m.
Teachers and students immediately followed safety protocols after the tremor. No injuries were reported based on initial information, and classes were later suspended.
Strong quake off Mindanao. The earthquake struck off southern Mindanao on Monday morning, prompting tsunami warnings and evacuations in coastal areas. Phivolcs warned of possible damage and elevated sea levels, while President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered a rapid national response for affected communities.
The quake was felt strongly in parts of Mindanao, with damage reported in several areas, including General Santos City. Schools were among the places where people were caught by the morning tremor, which struck just as classes and work were beginning.
