For many, Pope Francis was a moral compass who urged compassion and understanding amid war, disease, and environmental degradation
The world – not just Catholics – mourns the death of Pope Francis on the morning after Easter Monday. He had spent his final days working, even after a grueling bout with double pneumonia that had him hospitalized for over a month. He had worked even from his sick bed, and hurried to the Vatican to resume his duties as soon as he felt well enough.
No wonder he was well-loved across the globe. Many saw him as a moral compass, who urged compassion and understanding amid war, disease, and environmental degradation. He had opened the Roman Catholic Church to those who had previously been deemed unworthy like the LGBTQ community and divorcees. He acknowledged and apologized for the church’s sins, such as the sexual abuse of children and historical atrocities against indigenous peoples.
He always insisted that the church must embrace and be close to the poor, those who have less and are of little consequence in the world. For these and more, he was and is well-loved, and will be remembered as the radical pontiff who led the Christian world through tumultuous times.
