MANILA, Philippines — Some classes in Albay have been suspended due to ongoing volcanic activity from Mayon Volcano, local authorities said.

Guinobatan, Albay

In an announcement on Sunday, May 3, Guinobatan Mayor Gemma Ongjoco suspended classes in both private and public schools in the municipality on May 4.

The suspension also covers non-teaching personnel, according to Ongjoco.

“All are advised to observe precautionary measures and stay updated with advisories from the local disaster risk reduction and management office,” Ongjoco said.

In an advisory on Sunday, state seismologists from Phivolcs said Mayon Volcano remained under Alert Level 3 after spewing a cloud of ash and debris across Bicol.

Aside from ash emissions, state seismologists also recorded weak strombolian activity, along with sporadic lava fountaining, a series of pyroclastic density currents within Mi-isi Gully and 32 volcanic earthquakes.
