Residents of Novaliches in Quezon City thought that a group of men were outsourced service providers who were tapped to speed up the internet connection in their area.

And it was only when the instinct of patrolling cops kicked in that they all found out that the nine people loading wires inside a van were thieves in a daring cable theft in Barangay Bagbag on Thursday, July 31.

Police Maj. Gen. Anthony A. Aberin, director of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), said the nine workers were unable to present any document authorizing their work along Seminary Road in Novaliches when the Quezon City policemen started asking questions.

What made the cops suspicious was when they observed that the workers appeared to be cutting underground cables through a manhole and loading them into a van.

A quick verification made with the Philippine Long Distance Telecommunication Company (PLDT) disclosed that there was no authorized work in the area.

“We also received from local residents that portions of the area lost internet connectivity,” said Aberin as he explained that it turned out to be because of the illegal disconnection and tampering of network lines.

Seized from the suspects were an underground cable approximately two meters long, an alloy steel chain, a vault cutter, a crowbar; and a Hyundai closed van.

All arrested individuals were brought to the Novaliches Police Station for documentation and investigation.

A case for violation of Republic Act 10515, also known as the Anti-Cable Television and Cable Internet Tapping Act of 2013, is being prepared for referral to the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office for inquest proceedings.
