MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte has called on local government units to permanently ban motorcades and vehicle caravans amid rising fuel prices due to the conflict in the Middle East.
Duterte's proposal, issued in a statement on Tuesday, March 3, seeks to outlaw vehicle parades for all purposes, including festivals, celebrations and political demonstrations.
The vice president's statement comes after her supporters held a motorcade in Davao City to back her 2028 presidential bid.
This week also marks the eighth consecutive week of domestic diesel price hikes, most recently driven by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz following military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran.
While acknowledging the public's desire to "express anger against the administration" or "show support to former president Rodrigo Duterte," she described motorcades as "disruptive" and damaging to the environment.
"These events not only lead to higher fuel costs but also worsen air pollution and increase traffic congestion," Duterte said.
"I encourage exploring alternative ways to come together that are less disruptive and more sustainable, since we have a long way to go in making the world listen to the failures of government administration in the Philippines," the vice president said.
On March 1, hundreds of Duterte supporters in Davao City launched the "Green Rise: Action and Hope for 2028" with a dawn motorcade from Freedom Park. Other similar activities were reported in other parts of the country.
Pro-Duterte groups have also announced a motorcade on March 11 to mark the anniversary of former President Rodrigo Duterte's arrest and transfer to the International Criminal Court, and another on March 28 for his 80th birthday.
