MANILA, Philippines — The power arm of listed conglomerate Vivant Corp. has secured a 15-year contract to supply electricity to Siquijor, one of the Philippines’ emerging tourist destinations.
Vivant Energy signed a power supply agreement (PSA) with the Province of Siquijor Electric Cooperative (Prosielco) last Tuesday to provide 11 megawatts (MW) of capacity from its diesel plant.
The PSA, which resulted from a competitive selection process, is set to serve the municipalities of Larena, Lazi, Maria, San Juan, Enrique Villanueva and Siquijor.
Energy utilities like Prosielco are required to procure power through transparent and competitive auctions to ensure electricity is delivered to end-users at the least cost.
“We are hopeful that upon completion of the power plant, households and businesses will gain access to stable and dependable electricity,” Prosielco general manager Glenn Galvan said in a statement.
Siquijor faced an electricity crisis last year, prompting the government to revoke all provisional authorities previously granted to the Villar Group’s Siquijor Island Power Corp. (Sipcor) due to poor service.
Over 500 power interruptions were recorded in Siquijor last year, averaging at least 31 outages a month, according to an audit by the National Electrification Administration.
With Sipcor ceasing operations, TotalPower Inc. has stepped in to fulfill its role through emergency PSAs with Prosielco.
Last September, President Marcos led the ceremonial activation of new diesel power plants totaling 17.8 MW in Siquijor.
As an emerging tourist spot, Siquijor relies on reliable electricity to sustain economic growth and enhance the quality of life of its residents.
“It has long been Vivant Energy’s thrust to prioritize areas that are largely underserved,” Vivant Energy vice president for off-grid solutions Eric Omamalin said.
“We believe progress starts where the grid ends. Beyond building a business, Vivant is helping build communities by delivering sustainable solutions that improve everyday living,” he added.
