MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines posted the second fastest growth in motor vehicle output in ASEAN in the January to November period last year, rising by 14.7 percent year-on-year.
Data from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Automotive Federation (AAF) showed that vehicles produced in the Philippines as of end-November increased to 116,650 units from 101,707 units in the same period in 2023.
Posting the highest growth in motor vehicle production in the region during the period was Myanmar, with its output surging by 83.8 percent year-on-year to 2,515 units.
Apart from Myanmar and the Philippines, only Malaysia saw higher motor vehicle output in the region, increasing by 2.4 percent year-on-year to 725,173 units in the January to November period.
Other ASEAN countries tracked by the AAF registered declines in motor vehicle production in the January to November period last year such as Indonesia (-31.8 percent), Thailand (-20.2 percent) and Vietnam (-one percent).
Motor vehicles manufactured in ASEAN decreased by 12.7 percent to 3.47 million units during the 11-month period from 3.98 million units in the same period in 2023.
In terms of motor vehicle sales, the Philippines sold 425,209 units as of end-November, up by 8.8 percent from 390,654 units in the same period in 2023.
This placed the country fourth in terms of motor vehicle sales growth in ASEAN in the January to November period, behind Singapore with 40.2 percent growth, Myanmar (31.3 percent) and Vietnam (17.2 percent), but ahead of Malaysia (1.4 percent), Indonesia (-14.7 percent) and Thailand (-26.7 percent).
Motor vehicle sales in ASEAN slid by 7.3 percent to 2.82 million units in the January to November period from 3.04 million units in the same period in 2023.
AAF data also showed that the Philippines posted the fastest growth in motorcycle and scooter production in the January to November period as its output climbed by 8.6 percent to 1.25 million units from 1.15 million units in the same period in 2023.
Indonesia placed second with its motorcycle and scooter production up by 1.7 percent, while other neighbors registered lower motorcycle output such as Malaysia (-0.4 percent) and Thailand (-11.4 percent).
Motorcycles and scooters produced in ASEAN declined slightly to 9.95 million units during the period from 9.97 million units in the same period in 2023.
The Philippines also posted the fastest growth in motorcycle and scooter sales in ASEAN from January to November as it sold 1.55 million units, up by 7.6 percent from 1.44 million units in the same period in 2023.
Malaysia ranked second with 2.2 percent growth, followed by Indonesia (2.1 percent), Singapore (two percent) and Thailand (-9.6 percent).
ASEAN’s motorcycle and scooter sales increased slightly to 9.57 million units during the 11-month period from 9.49 million units in the same period in 2023.
