MANILA, Philippines — Illegal vape products worth P2.07 million were seized in Caloocan on Friday, the National Capital Region Police Office said.
NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin said the contraband was intercepted by police officers deployed along 12th Avenue in Barangay 100.
Aberin said police officers on routine patrol spotted two men loading the illegal products into a waiting van at 2:40 a.m. along Grimaldo Street.
When the officers checked, they found the vape products without the required Bureau of Internal Revenue tax stamps in violation of Republic Act 8424 or the Tax Reform Act, he added.
According to Aberin, police seized 18,000 vape pods from the suspects who are also facing cases for violation of the Comprehensive Vape Regulation Act.
He said the suspects admitted during interrogation that they were supposed to deliver the vapes to retailers in northern Metro Manila.
“The vapes came from abroad and were sourced through a local middleman coordinating with a foreign supplier,” Aberin said, noting that investigators are probing the case further to determine if the contraband is linked to the activities of a large organized group.
“Operations like this demonstrate that NCRPO remains relentless in enforcing laws against illicit and untaxed products circulating in our communities,” Aberin said.
Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., Philippine National Police chief, earlier ordered the PNP units to intensify its intelligence-driven operations against people and organized groups involved in the illicit vape trade.
Nartatez said the PNP is backing tougher regulations against vape products, citing the concern of medical experts on the adverse effects of vapes on teenagers and minors.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) seized P6.8 million worth of shabu and arrested an illegal drugs dealer in Parañaque on Friday.
The PDEA said the suspect, identified only as Anton, was apprehended during a sting operation in Barangay Don Bosco.
According to the PDEA, Anton is involved in the bulk distribution of illegal drugs in Metro Manila and Pampanga.
Anton was placed on surveillance for three weeks before the sting operation, the PDEA added.
