Looking to dish out lessons amid UAAP stardom, UST Golden Tigresses team captain Detdet Pepito also learns valuable ones during her internship as a Grade 3 teacher in Manila
MANILA, Philippines – As UST women’s volleyball captain Detdet Pepito slowly transitions into a possible career as an educator, she paid tribute to the sacrifices many teachers make for the sake of their students.
Pepito, an elementary education major, is currently teaching Grade 3 students in Manila as part of her internship course, where her volleyball stardom crossed over with her academic endeavor.
“Instead of calling me ‘Teacher,’ they call me ‘Pepito Pepito!’ then called me ‘Ate! Ate!‘ I’m not your ate, I’m your teacher!” she told reporters after UST’s straight sets win against Ateneo on Sunday, March 9.
“Really, it’s hard, since other idolize you and I needed to keep them in line since I’m a teacher, so I ask for apologies, I’m just doing it.”
Currently, public schools in the country face a myriad of problems such as poverty, and lack of resources, and infrastructure such as classrooms.
Moreover, other schools in the country experience no access to electricity and potable water, according to the Education department, which affects the quality of education.
Another possible problem is teaching overload, which could cause mismatch in lessons.
“I studied in public school, I thought to myself, ‘Kaya ko to!’ (I could do it), I want to become a teacher and be sungit sungit (grumpy), but when I came back, I saw that the children now are different,” said Pepito.
“I recognize their sacrifices, their love for their students.”
A teacher during the day and a volleyball star at night, the all-around Pepito continues to wear many hats in her UAAP journey, and she continues to prove they all fit her with no problem. – Rappler.com
