Captain libero Detdet Pepito don the UST colors for possibly the final time after the Tigresses crash out of the UAAP Season 87 women's volleyball tournament following a Final Four loss to the La Salle Lady Spikers
MANILA, Philippines – While UST Golden Tigresses team captain Detdet Pepito remains non-committal on returning for a fifth and final year, she said she would love to feel the warm support of the Thomasian community again for a potential UAAP Season 88 stint.
Pepito donned the UST colors for possibly the final time after the Tigresses saw the end of their Season 87 women’s volleyball tournament run following a Final Four loss to the La Salle Lady Spikers on Saturday, May 3.
“We feel a different kind of support here,” Pepito said Filipino. “It’s true what ate Eya (Laure) said, that the UAAP is different and that the support we get from UST is different. We still want to experience that but let’s see.”
After a runner-up finish in Season 86, the Tigresses endured personnel woes this year, with UST losing Jonna Perdido and Xyza Gula to season-ending injuries even before the tournament started.
Still, the Tigresses finished the elimination round with a 9-5 record and forged a playoff for the second seed and a twice-to-beat advantage with the Lady Spikers.
La Salle, though, showed UST the door as the Lady Spikers won the playoff then gave the Tigresses the boot in the Final Four.
For Pepito, who has represented UST since high school, being respectful to people regardless of their background is the greatest legacy she would leave.
“Ever since, values matter the most for a player from UST. I’m happy because we were able to instill the value of respecting everyone in the young players,” said Pepito.
“This applies to even the (security) guards, janitors, and even alumni. That should be the attitude.”
Despite their exit, the Tigresses still have a bright future ahead with a steady stream of homegrown players and recruits. – Rappler.com
