MANILA, Philippines — The United States and the Philippines conducted bilateral maritime activities in the West Philippine Sea, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said on Thursday, December 11.

The AFP and the United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) held the ninth Bilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MCA) on December 9 and 10 to enhance interoperability and strengthen joint capabilities.

During the MCA, the AFP deployed the BRP Jose Rizal (FF150), three FA-50 fighter jets, three A-29B Super Tucano aircraft, one PAF Black Hawk and one Sokol helicopter

“These assets demonstrated the Philippines’ expanding operational readiness and its growing ability to integrate with allied forces in complex maritime scenarios,” the AFP said in a statement to the media.

Meanwhile, the USINDOPACOM utilized the USS Rafael Peralta (DDG-115), MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, and a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

The AFP said that the two militaries were able to conduct several activities, including division tactics, ship maneuvering exercises, and more.

“These activities sharpened coordination, improved communication procedures, and enhanced the ability of both militaries to operate seamlessly in a dynamic maritime environment,” the AFP said.

The MCA was held west of Zambales, in the West Philippine Sea, the AFP said. The military said that the exercises were within the country’s exclusive economic zone.

The West Philippine Sea remains a point of contention between China and the Philippines, with China encroaching on waters claimed by the Philippines.

In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled that the disputed waters belong to the Philippines. Despite the ruling, China continues to frequent the area, maintaining its territorial claims.
