MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines Open University will launch five new microcredential courses this May to help strengthen the country’s semiconductor workforce amid rising demand for skilled talent in high-tech manufacturing.

Unlike traditional college subjects that run for a full semester, these short courses can be completed in as little as two to four weeks, allowing learners to earn credentials and build industry-ready skills faster.

The new offerings are:

  • Introduction to Semiconductor Manufacturing
  • AI and Smart Manufacturing
  • Global Career, Entrepreneurship and Cross-Cultural Communication
  • Foundations of Semiconductor Materials Physics
  • Foundations of Industrial Electronics

The courses cover key areas in semiconductor production, innovation and global workforce readiness.

Endorsed by UPOU’s Faculty of Information and Communication Studies, the program is part of the Transnational Industry-Academe Integration Model on Semiconductors, a Philippines-Taiwan collaboration aimed at expanding innovation ecosystems and developing talent pipelines.

The initiative targets students, working professionals, career shifters and overseas Filipino workers seeking opportunities in the semiconductor sector.

At the center of the program is a proposed four-stage talent pathway that connects online learning with hands-on training, and may lead to international internships and employment opportunities.

Each course carries one credit unit under the Philippine Qualifications Framework Level 6, follows an open-admission policy with no formal prerequisites, and will be offered through flexible on-demand or cohort-based formats.

Tuition is set at P1,850 per course.

Interested applicants may email fics@upou.edu.ph or follow updates through UPOU’s official Facebook page and FICS Facebook page.
