MANILA, Philippines — Jhenroniel Rhey Timola Sanchez, a law graduate from the University of the Philippines, topped the 2025 Bar Examinations with a score of 92.70%, the Supreme Court announced on Wednesday, January 7.

Sanchez bested 11,425 Bar examinees who took the exam in September, securing a place among the 5,594 passers set to join the ranks of the country’s licensed lawyers.

He recently earned his Juris Doctor from UP Diliman College of Law in 2025, making this Bar exam his first attempt.

Before studying law, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at UP Los Baños, graduating in 2017 and becoming a registered electrical engineer that September.

Even after completing his undergraduate studies, he remained active in making a career for himself, as if law school itself did not provide enough opportunities for experience.

During his time at the UP College of Law, Sanchez served as a research assistant in the UP Law Center’s Information and Publication Division.

He also spent nearly three years, from 2022 to 2025, as a paralegal officer at GVA TNY Consulting Philippines Inc. Earlier, he worked briefly with the Taguig Safe City Task Force as one of its paralegals.

In 2018, he spent a year and five months as a project coordinator for Swedish-Swiss electrical engineering company ABB.

He also took his two-month internship at the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in Laguna during his undergraduate studies.

The five other topnotchers who also came from UP include:

  • Top 8 Marie Chantelle Atienza Sarmiento - 90.87%
  • Top 10 Jasmine Teriann Afable Yap - 90.36%
  • Top 13 Alfrancis Bagadiong Cabungcal - 89.80%
  • Top 15 Ignacio Lorenzo Dela Cruz Villareal - 89.70%
  • Top 19 Chinzen Tañada Viernes - 89.35%

This year’s passing rate of 48.98% also significantly exceeds last year’s 37.84%, making it one of the highest passing rates in history, nearly representing half of the examinees.

In 2024, the number of Bar passers rose only slightly, following the lowering of the passing grade from 75% to 74%. For 2025, Supreme Court Associate Justice Amy Lazaro-Javier said the typical 75% was applied.

The Supreme Court en banc announced the results of the 2025 Bar Examinations on Wednesday, January 7.
