MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines and the De La Salle University have signed a five-year memorandum of understanding that allows both schools to collaborate in research and academics.

The agreement — signed on Friday, May 2 — focuses on cooperation in social entrepreneurship and service learning initiatives.

"This notable partnership, a conscious effort to promote a culture of sustainability in the country, will have a far-reaching impact not only on our respective institutions, but on the broader academic and national communities we serve," UP President Angelo Jimenez said in a press release.

Under the memorandum, both universities will develop activities such as joint research projects, resource mobilization and exchange of academic information.

UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Leo Cubillan said separate agreements would need to be negotiated and agreed upon for specific projects. "A separate memorandum of agreement for each project shall be prepared and signed by both universities," he said.

The collaboration centers on social entrepreneurship, which the UP press release defines as "the innovative approach to impact on the lives and wellbeing of communities by targeting the triple bottom line of sustainability: economic, social and environmental development."

The partnership also focuses on service learning, where students apply classroom knowledge to address real community problems.

Both UP and DLSU have consistently ranked among the Philippines' top universities in global ranking systems such as those published by Times Higher Education and Quacquarelli Symonds
