MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines in Diliman regained the top spot among Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) in the January 2025 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, which tracks the impact and linkages of higher education.
Globally, UP Diliman ranked 938th out of nearly 32,000 HEIs in the list.
The UP Diliman campus was also ranked first during the January 2024 rankings, but was shut out of the top 10 in the July 2024 edition.
Previously in first place, De La Salle University (DLSU) now sits at second at the 1,521st spot, while UP System (1,829th) and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU, 2055th) were ranked third and fourth, respectively.
Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) placed fifth at the 2,406th spot.
The rest of the top 10 are Mapua University (3,215th), UP Manila (3,278th), Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (3,317th), University of San Carlos (3,663rd) and Mindanao State University Marawi City (4,180th).
During the July 2024 rankings, at least 364 HEIs in the country landed on the global list. Webometrics has yet to declare how many Philippine universities participated this year.
The bi-annual world site rankings are published by the Cybermetrics Lab of the Spanish National Research Council, Spain’s largest public research body. It tracks HEIs through the volume of content on their website, the visibility of these content and the impact of the published materials based on how much these are linked to other research materials online.
“The Ranking Web is not a ranking of university websites, but a ranking of universities themselves. It uses both webometric (all missions) and bibliometric (research mission) indicators,” Webometrics said.
“The primary objective of the Ranking Web is to promote open access to the knowledge generated by universities. The best strategy for improving a university’s rank is to increase the quantity and quality of its web content, which significantly enhances the transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge to society,” it added.
It also ranks schools based on impact, openness and excellence.
Started in 2004, the Cybermetrics Lab said the ranking was intended to motivate schools and researchers “to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities.”
