MANILA, Philippines — Union Bank of the Philippines emerged as the top issuer in Visa credit payment volume in the country last year, underscoring the growing use of credit cards for daily purchases, online transactions and planned spending.

In a statement, UnionBank said it has reached two million credit cards in circulation, which the bank attributed to continued demand for accessible financial tools, as well as digital onboarding and simplified application processes.

UnionBank said cardholders have increasingly used their credit cards for groceries, electronics, online purchases and other essentials, reflecting a broader shift toward more flexible payment tools amid still-elevated living costs.

“As more Filipinos become mindful of how they manage their budgets, this recognition highlights the growing importance of secure and flexible payment options in daily life,” said Mukul Sukhani, head of cards and loans at UnionBank.

“Our focus has always been to support customers with practical benefits – whether for essentials, online purchases, or occasional lifestyle experiences – so they can make the most of how they spend,” he said.

Visa also cited the growing role of digital payments in everyday transactions, saying consumers are looking for speed, security and convenience whether they are paying in physical stores, online platforms or abroad.

“From everyday essentials to important life moments, Visa enables fast, secure and seamless digital payments,” said Jeffrey Navarro, country manager for Visa Philippines.

“UnionBank Visa Cardholders benefit from a global network that helps them transact with confidence – whether in-store, online or abroad,” Navarro said.

UnionBank said its Visa credit cardholders can access dining and lifestyle savings, e-commerce deals, installment options, travel perks and accommodation offers.

These include discounts of up to 50 percent at more than 1,000 partner restaurants and outlets nationwide, including access to premium and Michelin-recognized dining experiences, complimentary dining perks and priority reservations at select establishments in the Philippines and overseas.
