UE head coach Chris Gavina suffers the consequences of his fiery, profanity-laced postgame rant as the UAAP hands down a huge four-game suspension effective immediately
MANILA, Philippines – The UAAP may not be able to hand out monetary fines, but it still made sure that unruly behavior has no place in its ranks as it handed out a huge four-game suspension to UE men’s basketball head coach Chris Gavina following his profane postgame rant last Wednesday, October 15.
In a statement on Saturday, October 18, the UAAP Board of Managing Directors reprimanded Gavina for “unprofessional conduct towards game officials” after he blasted referees for their decision to throw out UE guard Wello Lingolingo on a loose-ball play that injured La Salle guard Kean Baclaan.
Lingolingo has since been suspended for three games for his supposed role in Baclaan’s season-ending injury.
“As a collegial body representing eight universities, the UAAP upholds the values of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and respect. Coach Gavina’s actions were contrary to these principles,” the statement read.
“As a teacher and leader, a coach sets a high standard for the student-athletes and the university community.”
A day prior, the league also handed out warnings to other coaches critical of officiating like Ateneo’s Tab Baldwin and NU’s Jeff Napa at the men’s division, and UP’s Paul Ramos, UE assistant RJ Argamino and UST’s Haydee Ong over at the women’s side.
This marks yet another referee-related issue plaguing the UAAP Season 88 basketball tournaments after a supposed referee pay gap controversy among men’s and women’s games and the aforementioned rants from multiple coaches, both coming off wins and losses.
Gavina starts his four-game suspension on Sunday, October 19, as the winless Red Warriors take on fellow cellar-dwellers FEU Tamaraws at the Araneta Coliseum. – Rappler.com
