MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Domeng (international name Jangmi) slightly weakened as it moved northward over the Philippine Sea, but rain remains the main concern as the cyclone continues to enhance the southwest monsoon, PAGASA said.

In its 11 a.m. bulletin on Monday, June 1, the state weather bureau said no tropical cyclone wind signal is in effect, but heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas were still expected in several areas due to Domeng and the enhanced southwest monsoon.

Domeng was last spotted 710 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 150 kph. It was moving northward at 20 kph.

Track. PAGASA said the enhanced southwest monsoon and Domeng’s outer circulation would bring heavy rainfall on Monday over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Panay Island and Negros Occidental.

On Tuesday, June 2, rains may affect Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Aklan and Capiz.

By Wednesday, June 3, rains may persist over Ilocos Region, Benguet, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Aklan and Capiz.

Domeng is expected to continue moving north-northeastward toward southern Japan and may leave the Philippine area of responsibility Monday night. It is also forecast to weaken into a severe tropical storm within 12 hours.

Rough seas. PAGASA said severe winds may still be felt in areas exposed to the monsoon, especially coastal and upland areas.

Sea travel also remains risky in several coastal waters.

PAGASA said waves may reach up to 5 meters over the northern and eastern seaboards of Batanes and up to 2.5 meters over the seaboards of Isabela, parts of Cagayan, Aurora, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, mainland Cagayan, Kalayaan Islands and parts of Palawan.

Mariners of small vessels were advised not to venture out to sea under these conditions.
