MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Raffy Tulfo yesterday ruled out a run for higher office in the 2028 elections, declaring that he will instead seek a second term in the Senate.
During a press conference, Tulfo firmly shut down recurring speculation about a potential presidential or vice-presidential campaign, stating that his decision is final.
“I don’t want to answer that because I have no intention (of running for higher office),” he said in Filipino.
When pressed if this applies to the upcoming elections, Tulfo replied, “As of today, as of the future. Final.”
The senator explained that he is content with his current position, which allows him to maintain a “low-key” profile while directly assisting Filipinos face-to-face.
Tulfo noted that ascending to the country’s top posts brings unnecessary headaches and a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” political environment.
“I really don’t have any intention to (run for higher office). I’m very happy at the Senate. Why would I place myself in an uncertain situation? I may not meet the expectations (of the people),” he said.
Tulfo assured his supporters of his political plans: “Yes, I will run for reelection, carve it in stone.”
He revealed that several private individuals have urged him to seek higher office, but he flatly declined their offers.
Tulfo categorically denied that either President Marcos or Vice President Sara Duterte had asked him to run for a higher post.
He said he has not endorsed anyone for president or vice president yet.
However, he expressed willingness to back a candidate – whether from the administration or the opposition – whose advocacies align with his own.
