MANILA, Philippines — Monkey off its back, TNT looks to proceed with its grand slam business with much more focus and fire.
After starting the PBA Philippine Cup at 0-3, the Tropang Giga restored some order in their Triple Crown drive with a breakthrough 89-84 win in the season-ending conference over San Miguel Beer.
This puts the reigning Governors’ and Commissioner’s Cups titleholders in position to go on a mild streak for the first time in the All-Filipino and boost their campaign some more.
Standing between TNT and its targeted back-to-back Ws in today’s action at the PhilSports Arena are the Terrafirma Dyip (1-4), who, coach Chot Reyes himself quickly reminded, own a 2-0 winning record head to head against the Tropang 5G in Season 49.
“Suki kami,” said Reyes ahead of the 5 p.m. tiff.
As such, Reyes said after getting it done against SMB last Sunday, they spent a good deal gearing up for the upset-conscious Dyip.
“We’re not going to this game on a high. We pride ourselves in keeping an even kill. We’re satisfied but (immediately) went back and designed really good, focused, hard practices to prepare for Terrafirma,” he said.
Meanwhile, Meralco (2-3) is plotting a course correction with its title retention quest veering off track and leading to three straight losses.
The Bolts seek to stop the bleeding at 7:30 p.m. against NorthPort (1-3), another squad on a three-match skid.
“We have a lot to figure out,” Meralco’s chief strategist Luigi Trillo said. “Are we better than that? Of course we are, but we’ve got to be more precise in what we’re doing.”
Trillo’s charges are bracing for a tough stretch as after the Batang Pier, they’re booked for back-to-back duels with heavyweights – TNT on Sunday and pacesetting Magnolia on Wednesday.
