MANILA, Philippines — Eight buses of a transport company serving Northern Luzon have been suspended for 30 days in connection with a fatal road accident in Santiago, Isabela.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) ordered the management of the Pangasinan Five Star Bus Company Inc. to explain in writing why the firm’s certificate of public convenience should not be suspended or revoked over the incident that left a woman dead.

The LTFRB directed the company to subject the bus drivers to a drug test and the suspended buses to an inspection for roadworthiness.

LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II said the company was ordered to surrender the license plates of the buses.

Mendoza assured relatives of the victims that the LTFRB would exhaust all efforts to obtain justice and accountability.

Investigation showed the driver lost control of the wheel, causing the bus to hit a woman and a pick-up truck.

Two bus passengers were injured in the incident.

Mendoza said an investigation would be conducted to determine if the bus company is complying with road safety rules.

The LTFRB set the hearing on July 7 to discuss issues surrounding the incident.

The agency said it has yet to confirm if the transport company has extended assistance or helped facilitate payment of insurance for the fatality and the injured victims. — Artemio Dumlao
