TUGUEGARAO CITY — To enhance the skills of tourism officers and stakeholders in Cagayan province, a tourism statistics training was held at Solomon Hotel in Lal-lo town on Feb. 20-21, 2025.

Rogelio Sending, Cagayan Provincial Information Office head, said the purpose of the training is to develop the capacity of industry stakeholders and partners of the Provincial Tourism Office (PTO) in data gathering, organization and analysis related to the tourism sector.

These skills are crucial in planning and decision-making for programs focused on boosting the tourism industry, Sending said.

Environmental planner and provincial tourism officer Jennifer Junio-Baquiran, meanwhile, emphasized the significance of tourism statistics in local governance.

"Tourism statistics measure the demand and supply in the industry, which is essential for effective governance. It provides a clear picture of the sector's status, serves as a tool for monitoring and evaluating progress and impact, and empowers leaders, tourism officers, and stakeholders to make informed decisions for planning, development and management," she said.

The two-day training covered key topics, such as the Cagayan Tourism Situationer 2024, basic tourism statistics, data collection forms, computations and analysis.

On the second day, participants traveled to Buguey as part of their immersion to participate in the Baybay Festival that highlights "bulong unas," a largehead hairtail fish, and pandan, a local plant essential to the town's culture and industry.

During the tour, the Cagayan Tourism Supply Profiling System was also launched.

This was developed by the Internal Systems Unit (ISU) of the Provincial Government of Cagayan, the first local government unit in the country to establish such a platform.

"Initially, we will measure the primary tourism enterprises in Cagayan, starting with accommodation establishments. This system will allow us to profile hotels based on bed capacity, average length of stay, employment, marketing and promotion activities, transaction modes, and available facilities and services," Baquiran said.
