ILOILO CITY — Honesty and integrity are always rewarded, they say, and this is evident in the case of taxi driver Anthony Aguirre, who received praises and cash rewards for returning P2.4 million cash left behind by a passenger.

Among the cash rewards received by Aguirre are P20,000 from the city government of Iloilo and P30,000 from 2nd District Rep. Michael "Mike" Gorriceta.

The taxi driver was also declared an adopted son of Iloilo City. Mayor Jerry Treñas conferred the title on Aguirre on Tuesday.

A resident of Amparo in Pavia, Aguirre is a father of two, including a graduating social work student at Central Philippine University and a high school student.

The P2.4 million cash was left behind by his passenger, a businesswoman traveling to Bacolod, on Jan. 18. Aguirre returned the money on the same day.

"His honesty is a true reflection of the values we Ilonggos hold — integrity, trustworthiness and service to others," said Treñas.

The mayor also noted that Aguirre's actions remind the public that honesty and kindness remain powerful forces in society.

Aguirre is the third individual to be declared an adopted son of Iloilo City. The first was former Iloilo City Police Office chief Col. Joeresty Coronica in July 2024, followed by Roel Castro, MORE Electric and Power Corp. president and chief executive officer, in December.
