TACLOBAN CITY — The Department of Public Works and Highways-Regional Office 8 (DPWH-8) reported that the development of the Tacloban Airport Passenger Terminal Building Phase 3 is moving ahead of schedule, with tangible accomplishments exceeding the projected targets.

DPWH-8 manages two contracts for the Tacloban City Airport Development Project, both with favorable progress rates.

According to the most recent report of the DPWH, the construction of passenger terminal building (Phase 3) in Tacloban Airport is progressing at a 48.33 percent rate, compared to an expected 3.98 percent completion rate for this contract.

"Phase 3 of this project is tracking positively, and that we are optimistic that civil works expected of us (DPWH) will be completed before its target completion date," DPWH Regional Director Edgar Tabacon said.

This phase's work scope includes embankment construction, waterproofing, tile and painting work, installation of essential equipment such as the air conditioning system and electric elevators, carpentry and woodworking, and installation of support equipment such as screening and some ground support equipment.

Aside from the third phase, DPWH-8 is working on additional buildings and airport support facilities, which are expected to be completed in October this year and has released P159.776 million of the P500 million fund allotment.

Phases 1 and 2 are carried out by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the project's principal authority.

The construction of the new Tacloban City Airport, which represents an enhanced and modernized airport facility that emphasizes safety, efficiency, and passenger comfort, would strengthen the city's infrastructure and position as a major travel hub in Eastern Visayas.

The modernized Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZR) airport, which ranks seventh among the country's busiest airports, is slated to operate international flights once completed.
