How collecting, and this certain collectible brand, made its way to the Philippines

1.jpgCOLLECTOR'S CULTURE It isn't uncommon these days to find people with fuzzy little friends as little companions

Life can often feel overwhelming. That’s why many seek solace in collecting, an artful form of escapism that provides a welcome distraction and a sense of purpose. While some may view this hobby as mere accumulation, for others, it’s a deliberate pursuit fueled by passion, curiosity, and a deep sense of self-expression. Afterall, collectability appeals to various aspects of human experience, including nostalgia, achievement, social interaction, investment, aesthetics, and personal fulfillment.

Collecting has roots in ancient civilizations, including the collection of rare coins, artifacts, and artworks by royalty and the elite. The practice of hoarding valuable items has existed for millennia.

During the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods, curiosity cabinets, commonly known as cabinets of curiosities, emerged as prominent displays of assorted collected items, ranging from natural history specimens to intricate artworks. This phenomenon marked a shift toward more systematic collecting practices, as individuals began curating and showcasing their diverse treasures in a structured manner.

Meanwhile, the 1800s saw the rise of mass production and consumer culture, leading to the popularization of collectibles like postcards, stamps, and trading cards.

The early 1900s ushered in a golden age for toy collecting, particularly with the advent of popular brands, characters, and items, including teddy bears, Marx toys, doll houses, and board games. It was post-World War II, however, that the surge in popularity of action figures, comics, and memorabilia from movies and television marked the beginning of fandom culture.

In the Philippines, collecting gained significant momentum in the late 20th century, which saw an explosion in interest in various types of collectibles, including stamps, coins, and toys, largely influenced by pop culture, local trends, and the increasing accessibility of foreign items.

In the ’90s, the rise of globalization and the internet further drove the phenomenon, as enthusiasts could easily access international markets and connect with other collectors. The emergence of toy collectibles, especially action figures and limited editions, also became popular.

Collecting remains thriving, with various genres attracting dedicated communities, including comic books and pop culture items. The integration of online platforms for buying and trading has further propelled the growth of the collecting scene.

Just last year, Dreams Global Trading Manila Inc., also known as Dreams PH, established itself as a gateway to some of the most sought-after collectibles in the world, marking its entry into the Philippines.

Recognizing the keen eye of Filipino collectors for high-quality and often whimsical collectibles, it was only natural for the company to officially establish operations in the country to cater to this enthusiastic local market.

By doing so, the brand was able to establish a deeper connection with its audience and offer a more streamlined way for casual and avid collectors to access their favorite items.
Top of Form

Whether it’s the endearing Sonny Angel, the mysterious SMISKI, or the ergonomic charm of Posture Pal, Dreams PH has captured the hearts of Filipinos in so short a time.

The demographic of Dreams Ph collectors is diverse. According to Tina Figuerroa, sales manager, majority are young adults who appreciate the unique aesthetic and storytelling behind these collectibles. Both men and women in this age group find joy in displaying them as part of their personal spaces or using them as decorative accents.

By the early 2000s, blind box figures became a staple in the industry, spreading from Japan to Western markets. Companies like Kidrobot, Funko, and later brands such as Sonny Angel and SMISKI capitalized on the growing demand for mystery collectibles.

Under Dreams PH, the Sonny Angel and SMISKI brands have quickly become fan favorites in the Philippines, particularly their bestselling “Hippers” series. This collection is designed to bring a sense of companionship by allowing these charming figures to “watch over you.” The Hippers can easily be attached to everyday objects such as smartphones, computers, and photo frames.

Currently, the only official distributor of Dreams Ph in the country is Fully Booked. This partnership allows patrons to purchase authentic collectibles through the bookstore’s physical branches and select online platforms. While resellers may offer these products, buyers are encouraged to stick to official channels for authenticity and quality.

With an ever-growing fanbase and increasing awareness of collectible culture, Dreams Ph is poised for expansion. As the enterprise continues to mature in the Philippines, fans can look forward to more exclusive releases and exciting finds in the world of Dreams.
