CEBU CITY — Seven parked cars and two motorcycles were damaged, and one woman was injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) plowed through a gasoline station in Barangay Mambaling on Easter Sunday.

The incident happened at around 6:30 a.m. along F. Vestil Street.

Authorities said the SUV driver, a 19-year-old resident of Lapu-Lapu City, fell asleep behind the wheel.

Based on the investigation of the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) of the Cebu City Police Office, a Nissan Terra bearing plate number GBF 3401 was being driven by Jaanhere Angelo Dañas when the incident took place.

Dañas is a resident of Sitio Mahayahay in Barangay Bankal, Lapu-Lapu City.

In a report, the police said Dañas allegedly fell asleep while driving the SUV along F. Vestil Street. As a result, the SUV veered off the road and slammed into a Phoenix gasoline station, hitting vehicles that were parked within the premises.

The impact of the crash was strong enough to topple a gas pump. The fallen pump landed on one of the parked motorcycles.

A woman who was reportedly sleeping near the pump station at the time was hit by debris and was thrown a few meters away due to the force of the collision. She sustained injuries and required immediate medical attention.

The damaged vehicles include a Toyota Avanza (GBF 7226) owned by Jay Julius Tabalin, 35, who lives in Mambaling.

Also damaged were a Mitsubishi Lancer sedan with plate number GNX 848, a Suzuki Multicab pick-up (YJV 613), a Toyota Vios (NXQ 431), a Suzuki Alto (YFZ 919), a Mitsubishi Mirage (GBA 7382), and an Isuzu MU-X (GAB 8992). Two motorcycles, a Honda Click and a Yamaha NMAX, were also hit during the incident.

Jaime Sanjorjo Jalico, caretaker of the gasoline station and a resident of Sitio Mangga in Barangay San Roque, said some of the damaged vehicles were owned by customers who regularly rent parking space from the gasoline station.

Jalico also expressed shock at the extent of the damage, describing the incident as one of the most chaotic he has witnessed in years of managing the gas station.

Following the crash, Dañas reportedly assured that he would shoulder the cost of repairs of the damaged vehicles as well as the hospitalization bill of the injured woman.
