The survivors of the road-rage shooting in Antipolo took to "Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho" to share their sides of the story.
During the violent confrontation that shocked the public, a group of motorists got physical on the road, to the point where one of them pulled out his gun and shot a rider.
One who was wounded from the incident, Davis, is currently recovering in a Marikina City hospital after getting shot in the chest.
During his interview with Jessica Soho, Davis said that he, his wife 'Marian,' and their three children were on the way home. They saw two motorists in a scuffle with an SUV driver.
Seeing that the three were throwing punches, Davis got off of his e-tricycle to stop the fight.
During the heated fight, the SUV driver pulled out his gun to shoot the riders, injuring Davis in the chest. At the time, Davis was unaware that he was also shot.
Meanwhile, the SUV driver carried his live-in partner, whom he also accidentally shot, into their car, then escaped the scene.
As for the suspect, police quickly sprung into action to chase after him. The hot pursuit operation only took around 20 minutes, and the suspect was arrested immediately.
His wounded partner was brought to the hospital, while the suspect remains at the Antipolo City Police Station.
The suspect refused to give a statement on camera. But in a conversation with Jessica Soho, it was obvious that he was still agitated about what happened.
Meanwhile, one of the riders was hit with a bullet in the arm. He was released from the hospital, but struggled to pay the fees.
The other rider, who was shot in the head, underwent treatment, but succumbed to his injuries on Monday.
What really happened?
"Lumalabas po talaga na road rage ito. Nagsimula ito doon sa intersection sa national road tapos yung Boso-Boso na barangay road," Lt. Col. Ryan Manongdo, Acting Chief Of Police, Antipolo City Police Station said.
["It really seems to be a case of road rage. It began at the intersection of the national road and Boso-Boso barangay road."]
"So, paglabas po kasi ng ating suspect gamit 'yung kanyang black na SUV, parang nagmadali po siya so muntik niya pong matamaan 'yung unang biktima natin ng motor. Tapos 'yun, nagkaroon pa sila ng habulan. Hanggang nagpang-abot sila" he added.
["When our suspect came out in his black SUV, he seemed to be in a hurry and nearly hit our first victim who was on a motorcycle. A chase then ensued, eventually leading to a confrontation."]
According po. Lt. Col.
["Instead of resolving things verbally, the situation escalated into a fistfight. According to our suspect, his vision suddenly went dark."]
Actually ang parang una niyang natamaan is ang kanyang girlfriend o ' yung kinakasama," he added.
["He didn't realize he had already drawn his gun and was firing indiscriminately. In fact, the first person he appears to have shot was his girlfriend or live-in partner."]
His firearm was registered, PNP said.
However, due to the upcoming elections, there is a gun ban.
For the mere fact that he was carrying a firearm, the suspect had violated the law.
Divided opinions
Following this incident, the public had mixed reactions, with some siding with John, and the others condemning his actions.
A representative from Antipolo police emphasized that using firearms during bursts of emotions is not a good or valid reason.
"May kaakibat itong responsibilidad na sabi nga sa rules natin, for cardinal rules ng firearms is never shoot the firearms sa isang bagay na hindi mo intention sirain or patayin. So, kaakibat nito ang napakalaking responsibilidad dahil po buhay po ang nakasalalay po dito," Lt. Col. Manongdo said.
["This comes with a great responsibility. As our rules state, one of the cardinal rules of firearm safety is to never shoot at anything you do not intend to damage or kill. Lives are at stake, so this responsibility is incredibly serious."]
["Regarding the fistfight, the complainant may also file a case for physical injury, as he sustained bodily harm. His cheekbone is fractured, and he has bruises on various parts of his body."]
To end, the officer has this message for the public.
"Ang kalsada ay public road po 'yan, hindi mo po niyan pag-aari," he said. "Isip-isip muna tayo bago tayo gumawa na 'yung burst of emotion natin."
["Every road is a public space—you don't own it. Let's take a moment to think before acting on a burst of emotion."] —JCB, GMA Integrated News
