GMA Kapuso Foundation headed to Sta. Maria, Laguna to offer hygiene and health assistance to students.
According to “24 Oras,” Friday, the project specifically targeted two issues: head lice infestations and dental health.
Junita Luna, a resident of the municipality, patiently combs her grandchildren’s hair every day to get rid of their lice.
“Mahilig po silang maglaro sa initan. Madami ho talaga. Hindi lang marami, kundi talagang napakadami,” she said.
She also believes that using shampoo for chicken is an effective treatment.
However, dermatologist Dr. Grace Beltran cautioned against using products not intended for humans.
“There are some ingredients that are only good for animals and some that are only good for humans. Pwedeng malason ‘yung taong gagamit no’n," she said.
"Kung matagal na ‘yung kuto nag-e-exist sa isang tao na merong gano’n, pwede talagang magkaroon ng iron deficiency anemia kasi nga they live on blood eh. 'Pag kumakagat siya, sinisipsip din niya 'yung blood at the same time."
Under the Linis Lusog Kapusong Kabataang Project, GMA Kapuso Foundation visited a Kapuso School, Calangay Elementary School, and organized activities including cleaning the students’ hair using lice-killing shampoo.
In addition to tackling head lice, the project partnered with the Philippine Association of Private School Dentists to address dental health.
Students were taught the correct way to brush their teeth. The project also provided free dental services, including fluoride varnish applications to help prevent tooth decay and extractions for temporary teeth.
Each participating child also received a complete hygiene kit.
