MANILA, Philippines — A tropical storm spotted outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) is expected to intensify the southwest monsoon or habagat by weekend, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
PAGASA said the storm-intensified monsoon would bring heavy rainfall over Mimaropa, Negros Island Region and Western Visayas as well as the western portion of Mindanao.
Residents in these areas have been advised to watch out for flooding and landslides.
PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the rainy season may be declared by the early part of June.
The tropical storm, with international name Jangmi, will be called Domeng once it enters PAR.
Jangmi is moving north-northwest and is expected to enter PAR tonight or early tomorrow.
It is expected to develop into a severe tropical storm as it enters PAR, and may intensify into a typhoon by weekend.
