MANILA, Philippines — The local stock market opened the week in negative territory as investors opted to stay cautious while waiting for fresh leads.

The benchmark Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) finished yesterday’s session at 5,989.29, down by 0.55 percent or 32.95 points.

The broader All Shares index also finished in the loss column, declining by 0.69 percent 24.56 points to 3,543.78.

Luis Limlingan, head of sales at Regina Capital, said the PSEi ended lower as investors locked in profits ahead of the release of key economic data on Friday.

“This decline came despite expectations of softer November inflation, supported by continued rice price deflation, which may give the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas additional room to consider another rate cut,” Limlingan said.

Sectoral gauges were mostly in the red, with holding firms shedding 1.88 percent. Mining and oil and services, meanwhile, increased by 2.47 percent and 0.58 percent, respectively.

Michael Ricafort, chief economist at Rizal Commercial Banking Corp., said the PSEi ended lower after the latest S&P Philippine Manufacturing Index declined to contraction mode at 47.4, the lowest in more than four years.

Ricafort also cited the latest net foreign selling at $31.9 million versus Friday’s $13.3 million.

Total value turnover stood at P6.48 billion.

Market breadth was positive as advancers edged out decliners, 99 to 97, while 65 issues were unchanged.

Alliance Global was the top traded stock, rising by 2.13 percent to P7.18 per share, followed by BDO Unibank which fell by 1.15 percent to P129.50 and ICTSI which jumped by 0.92 percent to P547.50.
