MANILA, Philippines — The Social Security System (SSS) is urging household employers to register their kasambahays to extend long-overdue social protection to one of the most vulnerable groups of workers.

SSS president and CEO Robert Joseph de Claro said the agency launched its Kasambahay Caravan last week across 43 sites in Metro Manila and Rizal to encourage employers to enlist their household helpers.

“This initiative ensures every kasambahay can access SSS benefits such as sickness, maternity, disability, unemployment, retirement, funeral and death,” he said.

Registered household workers will also be eligible for SSS loan programs, including salary and calamity loans, De Claro added.

On top of this, they will gain additional protection under the Employees’ Compensation Program, which covers work-related sickness, disability or death.

During the Kasambahay Caravan, the state insurer rolled out onsite services to make registration easier for household helpers and their employers.

These included SSS membership registration, issuance of SSS numbers and processing of member data change requests.

The caravan also offered assistance with online services such as My.SSS account registration, password resetting, generation of payment reference numbers, loan and benefit applications and orientations on benefits, coverage and employer responsibilities.

Republic Act 11199, or the Social Security Act of 2018, mandates employers to register their household helpers within 30 days from hiring and remit their contributions.

For helpers earning P5,000 or more per month, household employers should deduct the employee’s share from the salary, add their own contributions and pay through accredited channels.

For those earning P5,000 or less, employers should fully cover the contributions.

The SSS also seeks to expand the Kasambahay Caravan to bridge coverage gaps among household workers and ensure they receive the same basic protections as other formal?sector employees.
