Eight provinces may still see moderate to heavy rain from the southwest monsoon on Sunday, July 12

MANILA, Philippines – Floods and landslides remain possible as the southwest monsoon or habagat continues to bring scattered rain to Luzon and the Visayas on Sunday, July 12.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in an 11 am advisory on Sunday that the following provinces could be the most affected by rainfall in the next 48 hours:

Sunday noon, July 12, to Monday noon, July 13

  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 millimeters): Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique

Monday noon, July 13, to Tuesday noon, July 14

  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): La Union, Pangasinan

Mindanao, no longer affected by the southwest monsoon, may just have localized thunderstorms on Sunday.

The southwest monsoon had triggered floods and landslides in the past days as it was enhanced by tropical cyclone Inday (Bavi), which peaked as a super typhoon. Inday left the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as a typhoon on Saturday, July 11.

At least 17 people have been reported dead due to the enhanced southwest monsoon — all in Mindanao.

After Inday, PAGASA is monitoring a new low pressure area (LPA) outside PAR.

The LPA was located 2,005 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas as of 8 am on Sunday. It has a low chance of developing into a tropical depression within 24 hours, but could eventually enter PAR.

The weather bureau is expected to release updates on the LPA in the coming days. – Rappler.com
