MANILA, Philippines — Sy-led SM Prime Holdings Inc. has installed about 100 megawatts (MW)-peak of rooftop solar across its 59 properties, signaling a strong push toward a low-carbon future, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).
The integrated property developer of the Philippines’ richest family marked the milestone yesterday at the “Switch On to 100 MW” event, which the DOE lauded for supporting the country’s energy transition.
“Clean energy becomes truly powerful when people feel its benefits where they live, work and gather. SM Prime’s achievement sends a clear message: sustainability can be accessible, visible and part of daily life,” Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said.
SM Prime’s rooftop solar installations are expected to help reduce carbon emissions and grid consumption while reinforcing the country’s energy resilience.
As of this year, the company has deployed at least 200,000 solar modules across 65 hectares of rooftop space on its properties, including malls.
Earlier, SM sPrime switched on the country’s largest rooftop solar photovoltaic system at SM Fairview in Quezon City.
With an annual generation output of 5,960 MW-hours, the solar facility is projected to provide 11 percent of the mall’s total energy requirements.
“Every MW of clean energy that comes online helps reduce our reliance on imported fuel, shields consumers from volatile energy prices and strengthens our long-term climate commitments,” Garin said.
“We encourage more companies to follow this example and invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions,” she said.
