MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Batanes as Tropical Depression Ester continues moving east northeastward toward waters east of Taiwan, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Friday, June 5.

In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Ester was spotted 250 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes, with maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.

The tropical depression was moving east-northeastward at 15 kph.

Under Signal No. 1, strong winds ranging from 39 to 61 kph may be experienced within 36 hours, posing minimal to minor threats to life and property.

Strong winds. PAGASA said strong to gale-force gusts enhanced by the southwest monsoon may continue to affect Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region and Cagayan Valley through Saturday, particularly in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds.

Sea conditions. Rough seas of up to 3.5 meters are expected over the northern and western seaboards of Batanes, while waves of up to 3 meters may affect the rest of Batanes, Babuyan Islands and the northern seaboard of Ilocos Norte.

Mariners of small seacraft, including motorbancas, were advised not to venture out to sea in affected waters.

Track, intensity. PAGASA said Ester is expected to continue moving generally northeastward and may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday morning.

The weather disturbance may maintain its strength while traversing Taiwan before gradually intensifying over the East China Sea and possibly reaching tropical storm category by Saturday.
