MANILA, Philippines — TV5’s “Sing Galing” has made a comeback after two years with “singmasters” Randy Santiago, K Brosas and Donita Nose returning as hosts.
Also rejoining the karaoke game show are “jukebosses” Ariel Rivera, Allan K, Jessa Zaragoza, Ethel Booba and the OPM hitmaker Rey Valera as the head “jukeboss.”
Adding to the excitement to the show are “jukebosses,” Ella May Saison, Nina, Mitoy Yonting and multi-awarded songwriter Vehnee Saturno.
A new set of talents and social media sensations are also joining them, with the likes of Queenay, Gab Pascual, Ari G and Yanyan De Jesus as its “singtokers.”
The first-ever grand champion of their previous edition, Marimar, will co-host the online segment of the show, “NOW ZENDING,” alongside Zendee.
During the “Media Videoke-Con” presscon at Rockstar KTV in Greenhills, the “singmasters” and “jukebosses” detailed the qualities they are searching for in the next “Ultimate Bida-Oke Star.”
Mitoy said he is particular with the voice distinction and style of the performer. “Those are the two main categories that I’m looking for. Adding to that is the wit and how he or she performs,” he added.
“Sing Galing” is also a game of luck, continued Randy and K.
Randy pointed out, “For example, there are three good contestants who are competing. Merong bunutan yan eh. Yung hindi bagay sa kanya, kunyari lalaki at babae nag-away, kunyari lalaki ang nanalo. But ang nakuha niyang boses pambabae.
“What happens is the advantage goes to the female contestant. At the end of the day, even if the male contestant is good, tinatalo ng babae.”
K chimed in, “In other words, ‘Sing Galing’ also involves luck. Pwede kasi mapunta sa ‘yo, hindi mo alam. Even if you are good — as great as Mariah Carey — but if you don’t know the song, sometimes dinadaan sa performance, even in the celebrity edition.”
“It’s not about biritan like other singing contests,” said Jessa, who added that they are also after the personality and showmanship of the performers.
Ella, for her part, shared that their aim is “to motivate the contestants and to make them feel good about themselves.”
“If you’re going to ask me as a ‘jukeboss,’ I will watch out for the feelings that the performers are giving to the songs — also the diction. For us, it’s about motivating them and giving them more confidence in themselves.”
“We have a different way of judging,” echoed Ethel.
“You should know the song, that’s important. Swertehan talaga. I know that because I came from this show.
“In judging, it’s not that mas magaling sa akin (they’re better). What we’re looking for here is how they will carry the song, especially if they don’t know it,” she went on.
For Vehnee, it’s someone who has a unique voice that could become a hitmaker. He stressed that there should be continuity after a contender wins a singing contest.
“Since TV5 is doing this kind of project, we should continuously support the artists, giving them songs that they could release (after winning),” the veteran composer said.
“And with the help of a song, the artist will have a name (in the industry).”
The “Sing Galing” Season 3 will also mount live performances at the malls for their monthly finals.
(“Sing Galing” airs Saturdays at 5:45 p.m. on TV5.)
