MANILA, Philippines —  Prominent business leader Cesar A. Buenaventura or CAB, regarded as the grand old wise man of Philippine business, has died at the age of 96.

The Makati Business Club (MBC) announced yesterday the passing of Buenaventura on Dec. 10.

CAB was the founding chairman of Pilipinas Shell Foundation Inc. and a founding member of the MBC, one of the largest and most influential business groups in the country.

He was a member of the MBC board for 27 years, from 1981 to 2008.

CAB, a leader skilled in the fields of general management, engineering and risk management, played a vital role in a number of Philippine business empires.

For oil firm Shell Pilipinas Corp., he is a towering figure in its history and is regarded as a respected leader, industry captain, mentor and inspiration to generations of Shell professionals.

CAB joined the Shell Pilipinas in 1956 and was chairman and CEO from 1975 to 1990.

In 1975, he became the first Filipino executive president of Shell Group in the Philippines, and the following year, Shell became the first multinational oil firm in the country.
