MANILA, Philippines — Incoming Mamamayang Liberal party-list Rep. Leila de Lima asked the Senate yesterday to prove that accountability is not optional, in reaction to the decision to move the date of the reading of the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte.
“To abandon this process is to abandon the people who still believe in the promise of justice. It tells every Filipino that those in power are beyond reach, and that accountability is optional,” De Lima said in a statement.
“We know what happens when process is ignored, when truth is silenced, when the powerful are shielded from scrutiny,” she added.
De Lima said that under their watch, they will not let it happen again and urged the Senate leadership to let the impeachment against Duterte be heard by the entire people.
She earlier said that there were rumors that the impeachment case will be “dead on arrival” at the Senate.
“It is done even before starting. Even the President seems to be showing that he has nothing to do with it or he does not want it,” De Lima said. — Neil Jayson Servallos
