MANILA, Philippines — Recognizing that the era of physical discs has ended, the Senate yesterday passed on third and final reading a bill abolishing the Optical Media Board.
Originally formed to combat optical disc piracy, the OMB has been dismantled by Senate Bill 1654, authored by Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian and sponsored by Sen. Robinhood Padilla.
The OMB has outlived its relevance as piracy has shifted almost entirely to online streaming, Padilla said.
The OMB resources will be transferred to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.
