MANILA, Philippines — The way Filipinos build is changing, and never has that change been more urgent. As the Philippines faces stronger typhoons, more frequent earthquakes and rising energy costs, Filipino developers and homeowners are rethinking how to construct for safety, sustainability and long-term performance.
While Structural Concrete Insulated Panels (SCIP) have been available in the country since the 1990s, Next Century Building Systems Inc. (NCBS) is advancing this technology locally with its NXT Panel system, strengthening domestic manufacturing, engineering capabilities and project support for developers, contractors and communities across the Philippines.
As the exclusive Philippine manufacturer of Italy’s Emmedue (M2) Panel System, NCBS delivers world-class SCIP technology with the advantage of local production.
Each panel combines expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation with reinforced concrete, creating a lightweight, high-strength, thermally efficient building system ideally suited to our tropical environment.
Why this technology, now more than ever
Climate change, natural disasters and rising energy prices have reshaped how Filipinos think about construction. Developers are now more conscious than ever of LEED, BERDE and WELL certifications—frameworks that reward buildings designed to conserve energy, reduce emissions and promote healthier living spaces.
At the same time, the industry faces growing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, as cement and concrete production account for a significant share of global CO?emissions. The NXT Panel System, with its EPS-insulated core and responsible use of concrete, directly supports this shift by reducing material waste, minimizing embodied carbon and lowering operational energy use.
“Technology like SCIP has never been as relevant as it is today,” said Jay Ong, president of NCBS.
“We are building in an era of volatile climate, rising costs, and where sustainability is no longer optional. Our goal is to make this globally trusted system accessible to Filipino builders who are ready to take construction to the next century.”
Proven globally, strengthened locally
In the Philippines, NCBS is driving wider adoption of this proven technology, backed by full-scale production, engineering expertise and design support from its 3,000-square-meter manufacturing facility in LIMA Estate, Batangas.
The NXT Panel System is engineered to perform in high-risk zones and withstand super-typhoon wind loads of over 250 kph. Its EPS-insulated core provides superior thermal comfort and energy efficiency, helping reduce reliance on air conditioning and lowering energy consumption by up to 40%.
By optimizing and promoting the responsible use of concrete, each NXT Panel significantly reduces the overall carbon footprint of construction projects while improving site efficiency and worker safety.
Why it matters now
- Accelerated Timelines: Dramatically reduces the construction schedule.
- Structural Safety: Designed for high seismic zones and super typhoon-level winds.
- Sustainable Savings: EPS insulation improves thermal comfort and reduces cooling costs.
- Green Compliance: Compatible with BERDE and LEED certification frameworks.
- Cost Savings: Streamlined construction lowers total build costs and project risks.
Building for a greener generation
Engr. Joshua Orias, head of engineering, design and services at NCBS, emphasized how insulation and material efficiency make the NXT Panel System ideal for the country’s current challenges.
“From a technical standpoint, the NXT Panel System addresses the realities of the Philippine environment directly,” Orias said.
“It provides superior structural strength, improves thermal insulation, and significantly reduces construction waste. The result is a building that is safer, more comfortable, and significantly more sustainable.”
From niche to national relevance
NXT Panel has already been used in a wide range of projects, including Unihealth Hospitals, De La Salle Zobel Vermosa and various residential projects, demonstrating performance across different sectors.
The company aims to continue expanding its role in affordable housing, green-certified developments and public infrastructure, partnering with developers, architects and government agencies to promote smarter, lower-carbon construction nationwide.
“By working with the country’s builders, engineers and designers,” Ong added, “we can help create communities that are stronger, cooler and better for future generations.”
