MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte said that “to stand firm in the face of threats, harassment” is the true spirit of EDSA people power following the commemoration of its 40th anniversary last Wednesday.
“Most people would rather just keep quiet. And in the Philippines, it is a lonely road to nowhere. To stand firm in the face of threats, harassment and bribery requires courage. But remember when you feel lonely, every time you uphold what is right, you honor the spirit of people power,” Duterte said yesterday in her speech during the Philippine Association of Local Government Accountants’ 18th Mindanao Geographical Conference in Davao City.
“Filipinos are rightly demanding to know where your money went while they lose their homes and livelihoods to every storm. When budgets are bloated but no tangible progress is felt, that is not a technical error. That is a failure of integrity in the budget process,” Duterte said.
The Vice President is facing impeachment complaints due to her alleged misuse of funds, among others.
VP moved to tears
Meanwhile, the Vice President became emotional as she recalled her journey as a politician, following the declaration of her presidential bid for 2028.
“It was nostalgic for me to see my colleagues at city hall again and I said to myself and I thought earlier what would have happened if I had just run for mayor and did not continue to run as Vice President,” Duterte said.
Duterte has denied that she resorted to the early declaration of her presidential bid amid issues hounding her and her family, particularly the fresh impeachment complaints against her.
