MANILA, Philippines — The contractor for the previous P486-million development of the Sangley Point Airport has been chosen to design and build the new stations for the EDSA Busway for P251 million.

A notice of award, released by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) last Dec. 29, named Unimasters Conglomeration Inc. as the winner of the P264.86-million contract to develop new busway stops, namely, in Cubao, Magallanes and Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange.

The contract was priced at P264.86 million but Unimasters submitted an offer of P251.06 million, enough to be chosen as the single calculated and responsive bid.

Unimasters, based in Tacloban, will be given a year to complete the project, with construction set to start this quarter. The DOTr, however, is hoping Unimasters can finish the stations before the end of the year.

Headed by businessman and engineer Wilson Chan, Unimasters is a contractor for multiple road projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). One of the company’s most popular works is the Duterte-era expansion of the Sangley Point Airport.

Last Sunday, the DPWH completed the rehabilitation of the Roxas Boulevard to Orense segment of the busway in time for the post-holiday rush.

In particular, the DPWH finished the asphalt overlay of the section between Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City and Orense in Makati City in line with efforts to rehabilitate EDSA.

Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the reopening has allowed carousel buses to traverse the northbound and southbound sections of the busway all throughout again.

“We thank the DPWH, under the leadership of Secretary Vince Dizon, because they finished the rehabilitation works on the busway quickly. The reopening is right on time as Filipinos return to school and work, so their travel will be faster and convenient using the busway,” Lopez said.

With the reopening, Lopez reminded motorists that private vehicles are prohibited from using the busway, warning them that penalties await violators. He added that the busway is covered by the No Contact Apprehension Policy of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority.

Last year the DOTr started the P247.59-million first phase rehabilitation of the busway covering the stations in Monumento, Bagong Barrio, North Avenue and Guadalupe.

Afterward, the agency proceeded with the P87.33-million project to rehabilitate the busway stop and reconstruct the infamous footbridge in Kamuning, which will be completed this quarter.
