CAMP BGEN VICENTE P. LIM, Calamba City — Personnel of the Lipa City Police Station rescued a saleslady and apprehended the suspect after a three-hour hostage-taking at SM City Lipa on Feb. 18, 2025.

The authorities identified the hostage-taker as alias "Alvin," 28, who held the saleslady, identified as "Jem," 25, hostage inside the Asianic Gadget Store while wielding a bladed weapon.

Police responded to the scene upon receiving the report, deploying trained negotiators and tactical teams to handle the situation.

After nearly three hours of negotiations led by LtCol. Rix Villareal, the chief of police of Lipa City, the suspect agreed to surrender peacefully.

As the suspect and the victim exited the store and approached the mall's escalator, Villareal and his team swiftly subdued the suspect, securing the bladed weapon.

During the struggle, Villareal was wounded on his right hand.

He was immediately given first aid by responders from Lipa City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, including the victim.

Further investigation revealed that two other store employees named "Warren" and "Sheryl," hid in the storage room throughout the incident.

Regional director BGen. Paul Kenneth Lucas commended the Lipa City Police Station for its swift and strategic response to preserve lives in such critical situations.

"The safety of our people is our top priority," said Lucas.

"This peaceful resolution is proof of the dedication and expertise of our police force in handling high-risk incidents," added Lucas. "We salute Villareal and his team for their bravery and commitment to public safety, as well as the support given by our stakeholders and the community we serve."

Lucas also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities.

"We encourage the public to cooperate with law enforcement in preventing crime and ensuring peace in our communities. Your full cooperation is essential in maintaining peace and order," he added.

Meanwhile, the arrested suspect, who requested to speak with the media and his family before surrendering, is facing charges of serious illegal detention and violation of the Omnibus Election Code for possessing a deadly weapon. The suspect was detained at the Lipa City Police Station custodial facility, while the police prepare the necessary documents for the filing of charges.
