After Premiumbikes
MANILA, Philippines — Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc. (RRHI) is not hitting the brakes on acquiring new brands following its recent purchase of motorcycle retailer Premiumbikes Corp., which in itself will see an accelerated expansion under the portfolio of the Gokongwei-owned multi-format retailer.
“We are talking to many. We’re always in talks,” RRHI president and CEO Stanley Co said when asked if the company is currently looking at other potential acquisitions.
Co, however, said that whether or not the discussions will come to fruition is the question.
“We’re always looking at opportunities in varying stages,” he said.
At present, Co said the brands under consideration are nothing outside what the group have currently in its portfolio.
“So adjacent, or extension, if possible,” he said.
In an interview with The STAR earlier this year, Co said RRHI is targeting to acquire new brands that would further diversify its current portfolio, including something the group does not have yet.
As one of the country’s largest multi-format retailers, RRHI has an expansive network of food stores, drugstores, department stores, do-it-yourself stores and specialty stores.
Last week, RRHI, through subsidiary Robinson’s Supermarket Corp., signed a share purchase agreement to acquire 100 percent of Premiumbikes Corp. from tycoon Lance Gokongwei for P146.4 million.
Premiumbikes is a motorcycle retailer in the Philippines, currently operating 214 stores nationwide.
The acquisition, which is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory clearance from the Philippine Competition Commission, will allow RRHI to enter the growing motorcycle market in the Philippines.
“You know we’re still very small compared to the number one player. And you see the amount of motorcycles outside on the road. So there’s definitely opportunity for us to really expand and open more stores and capture more areas,” Co said.
Co said that one possibility being considered for expansion is putting up Premiumbikes branches in Robinsons Malls.
“I mean that alone is an opportunity. How else can we expand? There’s a lot more. So we’re really covering the whole country,” he said.
RRHI ended the first half with a total of 2,401 stores consisting of 755 food stores, 1,082 drugstores, 49 department stores, 224 DIY stores and 291 specialty stores.
It also has over 2,100 franchised stores of community drugstore TGP.
